About Copyboard
Copyboard is a smart clipboard manager and cross-device data transfer tool developed and operated by Copyboard ("we", "our", or "us"). The app is available on macOS and Android, with iOS, Windows, and Linux support planned for future releases.
This Privacy Policy and Terms of Service govern your use of the Copyboard application ("App"), our website at copyboard.in ("Website"), and any related services (collectively, "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to these terms.
Data We Collect
We collect only the minimum data required to provide the Service. This is limited to account and subscription information.
| Data Type | What We Store | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Google Account Email | Your email address (read from Google Sign-In) | Identity verification; links your subscription across devices |
| Subscription Status | Plan name, status, expiry date | To unlock paid features across your devices |
| Payment Reference | Transaction/order ID (not card details) | Subscription verification and support |
| App Version | Version string (e.g., 1.0.0) | Update notifications |
All account data is stored securely in Google Firebase Firestore, which is accessible only to you (via your Google account) and to us for subscription management.
Data We Do NOT Collect
The following data is never collected, stored, or transmitted to our servers under any circumstances:
Magic Transfer — How It Works
Magic Transfer is Copyboard's cross-device sync feature. It allows you to seamlessly copy on one device and paste on another — over your local Wi-Fi network. Here is exactly how it works and what data moves where:
Connection Requirements
- All devices must be signed in with the same Google account (email address)
- All devices must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network
- If either condition is not met, no data transfer occurs
What Travels Between Devices
- Text content you explicitly copy or share
- Files you explicitly share via Copyboard (photos, videos, documents, folders)
- File metadata (name, size, type) broadcast as announcements on the local network
How the Transfer Happens
Copyboard uses UDP broadcast (port 45678) on your local network to announce new clipboard content and file availability. File transfers use a direct TCP connection (port 45679) between your devices. All traffic stays within your local Wi-Fi network — it never reaches the internet.
Multi-Device Support
You can connect up to 2 devices (Solo Plan), 6 devices (Family Plan), or 20 devices (Pro Plan) simultaneously — across macOS, Android, and future platforms (iOS, Windows, Linux). Any combination of devices is supported. Connection and disconnection happen automatically based on Wi-Fi availability.
File Availability Window
When a file is announced on the network, it remains available for download by other connected devices for up to 7 days from the time of the original announcement — as long as the source device reconnects to the same Wi-Fi network with the same account. After 7 days, the announcement expires automatically.
Supported File Types and Size
Magic Transfer supports all file types: text, photos, videos, documents, folders (zipped automatically), and any other files. The maximum file transfer size is 20 GB per file. Folders are zipped before transfer and automatically unzipped on the receiving device.
Nearby Transfer — How It Works
Nearby Transfer is a new feature added to Copyboard (Android & macOS) that allows direct file and clipboard sharing with any device on the same local network — including devices signed into a different Google account. This section describes exactly how it works and what data is handled.
What Makes Nearby Transfer Different from Magic Transfer
- Magic Transfer requires both devices to be signed into the same Google account — identity is verified via an email hash
- Nearby Transfer uses a shared PIN instead of account matching — devices from different accounts can communicate as long as they share the same PIN and are on the same local network
Authentication — PIN-Based Trust
To establish a Nearby Transfer connection, both devices must enable Nearby mode and enter the same PIN (4–20 characters). The PIN is:
- Hashed using SHA-256 before any network use — the plain text PIN never leaves your device
- Used to authenticate TCP file transfer connections between peers
- Combined with a subnet check (both devices must be on the same /24 local network) to prevent remote access
- Not stored on our servers at any point
What Can Be Transferred
- Text (sent via local UDP broadcast)
- Files of any type — photos, videos, documents, audio, archives
- Folders (automatically zipped before transfer; automatically unpacked on receiving device)
How Discovery Works
When Nearby mode is enabled, Copyboard broadcasts a discovery ping on the local network via UDP (port 45678). The ping includes the SHA-256 hash of the PIN. Devices that receive a ping with a matching PIN hash add the sender to their trusted peer list. No plain text PIN is ever broadcast.
Data Flow
- Discovery pings: UDP broadcast on local network only — include device name, IP address, and PIN hash
- File transfers: direct TCP connection (port 45679) between the two devices — data never leaves your local network
- Text transfers: UDP broadcast, received only by devices with matching PIN hash
- Nothing is sent to Copyboard servers — our servers are not involved in any Nearby Transfer data flow
Trust Duration & Expiry
Each trusted peer has an expiry time set when the connection is established (1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hours, or 24 hours). After expiry, the peer is automatically removed and the PIN must be verified again. Users can also disconnect any peer manually at any time.
Transfer History & Badges
Sent and received items via Nearby Transfer are recorded in the app's local History with a 🌐 (globe) badge. Items you sent are marked as "Sent" — they will not prompt you to download again. Items received show who sent them and when. History is stored only on your device — it is never synced to our servers.
Auto-Retry on Network Drop
If a file transfer is interrupted (e.g., Wi-Fi briefly drops), Copyboard automatically retries when the peer becomes reachable again. Transfers manually cancelled by the user are never auto-retried. No data is stored on our servers during retry — the retry happens directly between devices.
Supported Network Types
- Home or office Wi-Fi (same SSID or same /24 subnet)
- Mobile hotspot (both the hotspot owner and connected clients)
- Any LAN where both devices are in the same /24 subnet

Subscription & Billing
Copyboard is a subscription-based service. A subscription unlocks all features across all your connected devices.
Plans
| Plan | Devices | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Solo Plan | Up to 2 simultaneous devices | 1 year (renewable) |
| Family Plan | Up to 6 simultaneous devices | 1 year (renewable) |
| Pro Plan | Unlimited devices | 1 year (renewable) |
The "Family Plan" refers to multiple devices under a single account — it is not a shared family subscription across different users or email accounts.
Where You Can Subscribe
You can subscribe to Copyboard from any of the following:
- Copyboard website (copyboard.in) — processed via Razorpay
- macOS app — processed via Razorpay
- Android app (Google Play Store) — processed via Google Play Billing
Regardless of where you subscribe, your subscription is linked to your Google account email and applies to all your devices on any platform. Subscribing once covers all your connected devices.
Pricing
Subscription prices are displayed in Indian Rupees (₹) and US Dollars ($) on our website and macOS app. On Google Play, prices are shown in your local currency based on your country. Prices may vary slightly between platforms due to applicable platform fees and local tax regulations.
Renewal & Cancellation
- Subscriptions are valid for one year from the date of purchase
- Subscriptions do not renew automatically — you must manually renew each year
- If subscribed via Google Play, cancellation is managed through Google Play settings
- If subscribed via our website or macOS app, contact us for refund or cancellation requests
Refunds
If you are not satisfied with Copyboard, contact us within 7 days of purchase for a full refund. After 7 days, refunds are at our discretion. For Play Store purchases, refund requests must be made through Google Play.
Subscription Data
Your subscription status (plan, expiry date, status) is stored in Google Firebase Firestore under your account. This is used solely to verify access and provide the subscribed features across your devices.
Data Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the account data we store:
- All data in Firebase Firestore is encrypted at rest and in transit (TLS)
- Firestore security rules restrict access so only you (authenticated with your Google account) can read your own subscription data
- We do not store payment card numbers or sensitive payment data — payments are handled by Razorpay and Google Pay, both of which are PCI-DSS compliant
- Magic Transfer traffic on your local network is not encrypted end-to-end at the application layer, but it never leaves your local network and is filtered by an email identity hash — only devices signed into the same account can receive data
- Nearby Transfer traffic is similarly local-network only, authenticated by a PIN hash (SHA-256) — only devices with the matching hash on the same /24 subnet can receive transfers
Third-Party Services
Copyboard uses the following third-party services. Each has its own privacy policy:
| Service | Purpose | Data Shared |
|---|---|---|
| Google Sign-In | Authentication | Email address (read-only) |
| Google Firebase | Subscription storage | Email, plan, status, expiry |
| Razorpay | Payment processing (web & macOS) | Email, payment amount |

Copyboard uses Android's Accessibility Service to detect when you copy text to the clipboard. This is the only reliable, system-supported method for clipboard monitoring on Android (Android 10+ removed direct clipboard access for background apps).
The clipboard text captured by the Accessibility Service is:
- Stored locally on your device only
- Broadcast to your other connected devices via Magic Transfer (local Wi-Fi only) if you have Magic Transfer enabled
- Never sent to our servers
- Visible only on devices signed into the same Google account on the same Wi-Fi network
